Natural History Museum of the Petrified Forest of Lesvos
A visit to the Natural History Museum of the Petrified Forest of Lesvos introduces you to the story of an extraordinary natural wonder – not just of Lesvos island but of Greece generally. Located in Sigri, by the west coast, it is dedicated to the ancient, petrified forest on its doorstep and the geological evolution of the Aegean. You’ll learn how a thriving subtropical ecosystem was preserved under volcanic ash up to 20 million years ago. Fossilised trunks, roots and plant remains are presented alongside wider findings from the region, revealing how Lesvos was shaped over deep geological time. You can then head outdoors to explore the petrified forest itself.

The Archaeological Museum of Mytilene
The Archaeological Museum of Mytilene is found in the Kioski area, a little distance from the port, just below the castle. Set over two floors, it introduces you to the island’s ancient history, with a permanent exhibition that brings everyday life in ancient Mytilene into focus, especially during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Highlights include floor mosaics and frescoes from ancient villas – notably the famous House of Menander (3rd century AD) – alongside sculptures, reliefs and a carefully curated selection of clay vessels, jewellery, coins and other domestic objects. Together, they reveal the social, religious and economic rhythms of the ancient city.

The Municipal Gallery of Mytilene
Housed in the Halim Bey Mansion, a three-storey Ottoman-era residence dating from the late 19th century, the Municipal Gallery of Mytilene is one of the more unexpected museums of Lesvos. Carefully restored and opened as the city’s art gallery, it brings together local history and modern Greek art in a setting that feels both intimate and refined. The core of the collection comes from the donation of George Simos-Petris, a prominent art critic and intellectual closely connected to many of Greece’s leading painters, with further donations from his sister, Elli Simou.
Today, the gallery houses almost 140 paintings, alongside rare engravings, prints and books, with works by major , as well as international masters including Picasso and Matisse.

The Stratis Eleftheriades-Tériade Museum
Born in Lesvos in 1897, Stratis Eleftheriades (Tériade) moved to France where he became one of the most influential art publishers of the 20th century, shaping how modern art was presented, printed and understood. While in Paris, he founded the legendary magazine Verve (1937–1960), collaborating closely with artists such as Picasso, Matisse, Chagall and Miró, and pioneered the livre d’artiste through a series of hand-crafted, limited-edition books known as the Grands Livres. Returning to his birthplace, he founded the Tériade Museum-Library in the Vareia district, just outside Mytilene town.
It’s another unexpected museum for Lesvos, housing a complete edition of Verve magazines, original artist’s books, prints and drawings, alongside important works by Greek artists.

The Theophilos Museum
The Theophilos Museum was donated by Stratis Eleftheriadis (Tériade) and dedicated to Greece’s most famous folk artist. Born in Lesvos in 1867, Theophilos Hatzimichael was a self-taught painter whose work draws on Greek history, mythology and everyday rural life. After years working in Smyrna (Izmir) and Volos – often painting houses, shops and cafes for little money or some food – he returned to Lesvos, where he completed his final body of work. Recognition came largely after his death, thanks to Tériade, who funded the museum’s construction and donated 86 paintings from his private collection.
Four exhibition rooms feature works depicting scenes of olive harvesting, fishing, village life, traditional dress and heroic figures. Set in an olive grove and built of local stone, its location adds to the experience.

The World of Ouzo Museum
The World of Ouzo Museum explores Lesvos’ famed ouzo tradition. Set in Plomari, on the island’s south coast, it is part of the family-run Ouzo of Plomari Isidoros Arvanitis distillery, where ouzo has been produced for more than 130 years. A guided tour takes you through both traditional and modern production techniques, with a close look at hand-crafted copper stills and rare historical artefacts from the 19th century. You’ll learn why the ouzo here is double-distilled for nine hours and about the use of local ingredients such as Lisvori anise, and follow the process from distillation to bottling.
The experience ends, naturally, with a tasting – best enjoyed before heading to a seaside meze in Plomari.

Varvayanni Distillery & Museum
Another museum in Lesvos that celebrates Greece’s favourite summer drink is the Varvayanni Ouzo Museum. It is dedicated to one of the island’s longest-standing ouzo-making families. You’ll find original bottling and labelling equipment, archival material and the family’s first alembic, the copper distillation vessel used to test and refine recipes in Constantinople during the 19th century.
You can also follow how traditional methods sit alongside modern ouzo production today, before ending with an ouzo tasting experience.

The Museum of Industrial Olive-Oil Production of Lesvos
One of the best places to understand the importance of olives to Lesvos is the Museum of Industrial Olive-Oil Production. Located in Agia Paraskevi, near the Kalloni Saltpans, it is housed in the village’s former communal olive mill. Original machinery demonstrates the various stages of olive-oil production, from crushing and pressing to separating oil from water. You see how olive milling evolved from using steam power to diesel engines, and hear the human stories behind the process.
Emphasis is given to the mill’s rare communal ownership model and its impact on the local economy. Interactive displays, a cafe and an open-air theatre present olive production as a way of life on Lesvos.

Vranas Olive Press Museum
Another chapter in the olive-oil story of Lesvos unfolds at the Vranas Olive Press Museum, in Papados, 20km from Mytilene, around the Gulf of Gera. It is one of the island’s oldest olive presses, dating back to 1887, and once belonged to the family of Nobel Prize-winning poet Odysseas Elytis. After decades of decline, it was restored and reopened as a museum, with working machinery that includes the original diesel engine, mill, press and transmission belts. Beyond olive oil, the museum tells a wider story of industrial heritage, local history and community life in Lesvos. It also hosts exhibitions, concerts, film screenings and educational programmes.

The K-Gold Temporary Gallery
The K-Gold Temporary Gallery was founded in 2014 with a nomadic identity that turned unexpected settings such as village houses and former shops into contemporary art spaces. It is now based in the village of Agia Paraskevi and serves up curated exhibitions, performances, publications and educational programmes that aim to make modern art accessible to the wider public – especially younger audiences. Its exhibitions feature Greek and international artists and it specialises in collaborations with major cultural institutions in Greece and abroad. Surrounded by the sights and sounds of a traditional village, dedicated to modern art is certainly one of the least expected things to do in Lesvos.

The Vareltzidaina Mansion
You’ll find the Vareltzidaina Mansion in the village of Petra, in northern Lesvos. Dating from the late 18th century, it is one of the few surviving Ottoman-era manor houses. It was once set at the heart of a rural estate and its architecture tells a clear story of its function and status: a solid, stone-built ground floor with a defensive feel and a lighter upper level designed for family life and social gatherings. Inside, finely crafted wooden ceilings, period furnishings and painted decorative details reveal a world where elegance was achieved through restraint rather than excess.

The Folklore Museum at Vatousa
The Gogos Mansion, in which the Folklore Museum of Vatousa is housed, is one of Lesvos’ most elegant neoclassical homes. It was built in 1890 by a local doctor as a dowry for his daughter and it is a reminder of the prosperity of 19th-century rural Lesvos. Restored as a folklore museum, the exhibition spreads across three floors and traces everyday life in western Lesvos through objects rooted in agriculture, domestic routines and social customs.
There are farming tools and household utensils, historic photographs, furniture and an impressive collection of traditional clothing, with particular emphasis on women’s dress and urban fashion influences of the time. There is also a small library.
