The Benaki Museum of Hellenic Culture is organising the exhibition "The beginnings of sculpture: Archaeological finds from the Old World and Lesvos" from 27 September 2023 to 7 January 2024.

The exhibition, which is being shown for the first time in Greece, includes stone tools and "figures in stone" depicting birds, faces and bodies from various locations in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. The oldest exhibit is around 2.5 million years old, while the most recent one is only 50,000 years old.

These works by Homo sapiens' ancestors demonstrate an aesthetic awakening and the ability to recognise beauty and meaning in objects dating from millions of years before our time, suggesting that the beginnings of sculptural art can be traced back to the origins of the art of sculpture.
