National Archaeological Museum

44 Patision Street and 1 Tositsa

The National Archaeological Museum is opening its doors to contemporary artistic creation – starting a conversation between cultural heritage and contemporary art. This two-way relationship comes into being in the exhibition The past is now. George Lazongas: Myths and Antiquity in the temporary exhibition hall.

Works by artist George Lazongas are juxtaposed with artifacts of the National Archaeological Museum, from the prehistoric, archaic and classical period. Visitors of the exhibition can discover a new, different manner of reading and decoding ancient works of art of the National Archeological Museum, as well as other creations by Lazongas. The exhibition is divided into three sections “Mediterranean escapes”, “fragments of memory” and “transformations of images”. They constitute palimpsests of time, a concept coined by Lazongas in the terminology of Greek art history in the 1970s, describing the various stratifications of an image at various instants in time.

The exhibition is jointly curated by the Museum Director Dr. Anna-Vassiliki Karapanagiotou, and Dr. Evangelos Vivliodetis, head of the department of Exhibitions, Communication and Education at the NAM.

Announcement: On Thursday 17 November 2022 the Museum will be open from 08:30 until 13:00. Works by artist George Lazongas are juxtaposed with artifacts of the National Archaeological Museum, from the prehistoric, archaic and classical period.
