SPARTATHLON, the historic ultra-distance foot race between Athens and Sparta in the Peloponnese, returns from 30 September to 1 October to once again provide the ultimate challenge to extreme endurance athletes from all over the world. 

Starting from the Odeon of Herodes Atticus in Athens, the renowned International Ultramarathon Race covers a distance of 246.8 km and revives the footsteps of the ancient Athenian messenger Pheidippides, was sent to Sparta in 490 BC to ask for help in the war between the Greeks and the Persians in the Battle of Marathon. According to the ancient Greek historian Herodotus, Pheidippides arrived in Sparta the day after his departure from Athens and was successful in his mission.  

As one of the most difficult ultra-distance races in the world, Spartathlon is aimed exclusively at experienced runners who want to test their limits. If you are not a professional athlete, you can attend at any point along the course to cheer on the runners as they pass by and feel the aura of the longest marathon race in Greece!

Participants are selected by random draw and under strict conditions.
