The Castle of Rio hosts a theatrical performance of The Seagull, by Anton Chekhov, on 23 & 24 July 2026, as part of the All of Greece, One Culture 2026 programme.
In an era where the relationship between artists, their craft, and their survival is being redefined, a company of three actors and a musician grapple with Chekhov's iconic text. Structured on the principle of "theatre within theatre," the production turns the stage into a field of existential conflict.
At its core, The Seagull is a play about theatre itself – about art, vanity and failure. Stripped down to its essentials, the performance brings out the desperate struggle to communicate, and the divide between older and younger generations.
On stage, two men, one woman and a cello alternate roles, capturing the creator's most intimate confession on aesthetics and life. The performance becomes a living mirror for the agony of existence – through creation, the erosion of everyday life, and the vital need for expression against the non-negotiable demands of reality.
All of Greece, One Culture is the landmark initiative of Greece's Ministry of Culture, now in its seventh year, bringing performances to archaeological sites, monuments and museums across the country.
