The Greek National Opera will present Richard Wagner's Die Walküre at the Stavros Niarchos Hall of the SNFCC, in collaboration with the Royal Danish Opera, from 10 to 31 March 2024.

One of the world's most important and popular operas, Die Walküre is the second part of Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen (Der Ring des Nibelungen) tetralogy and is being presented for the first time by the Greek National Opera.

The composition of this colossal work, modelled on Aeschylus' Oresteia trilogy, occupied Wagner for many years. It is the fruit of the ideological ferment that dominated the German world in the mid-19th century and was Wagner’s focus during his stay in Dresden from 1841 to 1849. Drawing inspiration from the mythology of the northern countries, Wagner – who also wrote the poetic text of the work – used the series of operas to criticise the early industrial society of his time, the institution of marriage and power relations.
