The Old Fortress of Corfu hosts Common Breath on 26 & 27 July 2026, as part of All of Greece, One Culture 2026.
Common Breath is a contemporary music-theatre composition for ten brass instruments, percussion and narrator, with original music by Orestis Papaioannou, performed by the SymPnoia Ensemble. At the heart of the work lies the concept of breath as a shared denominator of human experience: life, speech, memory and collectivity.
Across a series of interconnected sections, the performance builds a dialogue between contemporary artistic creation and cultural heritage, weaving in subtle references to the classical repertoire. The narrator acts as a connective thread, spinning a poetic flow of words that turns music into an act of collective presence.
Conceived specifically for archaeological sites, the piece draws on the natural acoustics and symbolic weight of its setting, offering a ritualistic listening experience.
Common Breath points to the need to redefine what it means to be ‘human’ – through coexistence and a shared, unifying rhythm.
All of Greece, One Culture is the landmark initiative of Greece's Ministry of Culture, now in its seventh year, bringing performances to archaeological sites, monuments and museums across the country.
