The archaeological site of the Sanctuary of Messon, in Agia Paraskevi on the island of Lesvos, hosts Wise, Foolish and Troublesome: Self-Portraits Beyond Political Correctness on 17 and 18 July 2026, as part of All of Greece, One Culture 2026.

— "Even if all laws were abolished, we would continue to live in exactly the same way!" 

The satirist Lucian sells philosophers and would-be philosophers in the marketplace, as Skarimbas, Gonatas and Souris arrive on the scene, along with Embirikos and Sarantaris, perhaps Theophilos too – and others who "took to the mountains so the plain wouldn't swallow them."

These were thinkers who, each in their own way, struck a balance between the margins and the mainstream. And yet, look closely, and the roots of their thought turn out to be watered by the same deep well of humanism.

Within the outline shaped by these figures and their writings, a charged soundscape of overlapping polyphonies forms the connective thread, the canvas and the colours. The purpose of our life is…
