Museum of Industrial Olive Oil Production

Lesvos, North Aegean

The Piraeus Group Cultural Foundation, in collaboration with the Museum of Industrial Olive Oil Production of Lesvos, is organising the 1922 exhibition to commemorate the Asia Minor Catastrophe and the 100th anniversary of the Treaty of Lausanne.

The exhibition, which runs from July 2023 to June 2024, traces the history of the Greece’s Asia Minor Campaign from 1919-1922 and the uprooting and resettlement in Greece of Greek refugees from Anatolia (known as the Asia Minor Catastrophe), as well as the important contribution of these refugees on the island of Lesvos.

The five sections of the exhibition make use of texts by great writers such as Fotis Kontoglou, Dido Sotiriou, Elias Venezis and the authors Stratis Myrivilis and Asimakis Panselinos, to highlight the dynamic relationship between history and literature.

Rare archival material and photographs, personal objects and religious relics reveal moments of life before and after the tragedy of 1922. Particularly noteworthy are audio testimonies of refugees, letters from soldiers and the portable icon of Saints Constantine and Helen from the church of Zoodochos Pigi in Ayvali, which was saved from destruction at the last moment.
