As part of All of Greece One Culture 2025, the Castle of Mytilene in Lesvos will host the performance of The Castle of Mytilene: Building on the Past, on August 8 & 9.
Blending music and theatre, this site-specific performance takes audiences on a journey through seven milestone moments in the history of the castle. Each stop becomes a stage for a different artistic expression, shedding light on the events and people that shaped this evolving structure.
The performance explores how the Castle of Mytilene was built layer by layer—each mudbrick resting on the one before it, each civilisation leaving its mark. From ancient times through Byzantine, Genoese and Ottoman periods, the castle reflects a continuous blending of materials, cultures and ideas.
How have its walls shaped those who lived within them? And how has each generation interpreted and reimagined what came before? Building on the Past becomes a metaphor for cultural continuity—where East meets West, old meets new, and the past serves not only as memory but as a guide for what’s to come.
