Itinerary

Archaeological site of Knossos

  • Throne Room (10 minutes): One of the most visited areas in Knossos is the Throne Room where you can admire the replica of the Minoan throne and listen to the fascinating story of the woman who actually sat on the throne in order to discover if she was a queen or a priestess.

  • Queen’s Megaron (8 minutes): Admire the elegant frescoes of this room, equipped with a toilet room and a bathroom, that Sir Arthur Evans believed it was the private megaron of the Queen. Listen to the stories and discover the role of women in the minoan society.

  • North lustral area:  One of the most photographed sites in Knossos. According to archaeologist Sir  Arthur Evans, anyone who arrived in Knossos by the north side had to purify himself during a ritual ceremony in order to enter the palatial area.

The Heraklion Archaeological Museum

  • The Phaistos Disc (5 minutes):  Even though the antique cretan language remains an enigma, the Phaistos Disc gives us a hint of how the minoan writing should be, since it is the earliest example of typography. Come closer and observe the 45 pictorial signs that create 241 symbols, admiring the excellence of the minoan civilization.

  • The bull leaping fresco (8 minutes): The fresco testifies that the Minoans were the first toreadors in the world. Admire the dancing and ethereal movements of these young Minoans as they try to tame the bull, listening to the stories that narrate that the bull leaping was not an actual performance but an artistic invention.

  • The Minos ring (6 minutes): Listen to the stories and discover if the ring originally belonged to Minos, the mythical king of Crete. Learn how and why this exquisite ring was lost for decades and what the represented scenes reveal. Is the ring an iconographic testimony of Minoan thalassocracy or an ode to ancient goddesses?
