The surreal comedy "The Republic of Baklava", for one performance only on 16 October at the Royal Theatre of Thessaloniki.
A Greek-Turkish couple, Sofia and Fatih, two young people who met and fell in love as students in a neutral Western country, establish a business, a baklava shop, in the historic town of Messolonghi. But when they are confronted with the traditional hostility between the two countries, they decide to declare their business an independent state. A romantic venture, doomed from the start to fail. A team of "researchers" is called upon to reconstruct on stage the history of this tiny nation, its birth, conflicts, and legacy. Through a series of fictional, surreal, and comic situations, two young people try to free themselves from the weight of age-old stereotypes of hostility and invent for themselves a new identity. The Republic of Baklava is an unexpectedly hilarious theatrical pseudo-documentary that, although drawing inspiration from the historical events of 1821, is set in our modern, digitally interconnected, world, exploring issues of identity and political organization through the filter of today.
With Greek and English subtitles.
