The Archaeological site of Lerna, in Argolida, hosts the theatrical performance The Women of Alcyonia on 20 and 21 August 2026, as part of All of Greece, One Culture 2026.
At this site lies Lake Alcyonia, which, according to mythology, is bottomless, serves as a passage to the Underworld and is also the lair of the Lernaean Hydra. This Lake forms the starting point of the walking performance The Women of Alcyonia. As a spectator, you follow the paths of the water: from the lake to the River Pontinos, and onwards to the sea. You follow the course of beauty and resilience inherent in the water cycle. You follow human journeys marked by anguish, endurance and courage, ultimately leading towards harmony. These are the journeys of mortals who attain immortality as mythological heroes or deities. You follow the Danaïdes, Ariadne and Semele: female figures from the myths of a place known primarily for Heracles and Dionysus. Hera, goddess of women, order and Argos, guides you along these paths, engaging in dialogue through song accompanied by electronic music. In a present characterized by water scarcity and a need for resilience and courage, the performance brings to life, in the land of Lerna, figures from its mythology that highlight its contemporary significance.
