Description
Embark on a memorable hike along the historic Ice Makers’ Trail, which winds through the lush green forest of Mount Hortiatis, towering at 1,201 meters northeast of Thessaloniki. This trail follows the footsteps of the old villagers of Hortiatis who, on cold winter nights, would climb the mountain to make ice, later selling it to affluent families in Thessaloniki.
The hike takes you along a traditional stone-paved path, leading through the dense beech forest to the Hortiatis mountain shelter, about 4 kilometers from the starting point. Here, we’ll enjoy a relaxing stop where, if the shelter is open, we can savor a coffee or snack, surrounded by the natural beauty of the area.
On the way back, the trail offers stunning views and experiences from start to finish. With breathtaking vistas and moments for relaxation, this excursion is ideal for those seeking an authentic experience close to nature.
