Itinerary
1)The Mouse Island…Where Margo was caught almost naked by the young priest!
Recall the scene where Margo Durrell decided to sunbathe beneath a shrine, much to the shock and disapproval of the young priest? That iconic moment was captured at Mouse Island.
Situated on the Kanoni Peninsula, Mouse Island is recognized globally as a prominent landmark - primarily due to its mouse-like appearance. Its captivating natural surroundings, coupled with the monastery perched atop offering panoramic views of the peninsula, have rendered it an ideal location for TV series production. Therefore, it's no wonder that this picturesque locale was selected as a shooting site for the Durrells series!
2)Mon Repo Palace & Estate: The House of Countess Mavrodaki!
Just south of the city is the Mon Repos Palace, which doubles as the home of Countess Mavrodaki in the series. Now an archaeological museum, it was once the summer residence of the Greek royal family and was the birthplace of our very own Greek, Prince Philip. This imposing neoclassical palace was a gift out of love for a beautiful lady but also the object of conflict between the former royal family and the state. This exceptional palace was built in 1831 according to the plans of the English architect Whitmore, as a summer residence of the English Commissioner Frederic Adam, for the sake of his beloved Corfu Nina Palatianou, who dreamed of living in a small palace in the countryside. In 1863 Empress Sissy of Austria settled there for a long time and left her own mansion, also known as Achillion Palace.
3)Danilia Village: The Durrells TV Series main filming location!
Time seems to have stopped in Danilia village… Folklore museums, stone paved roads and medieval houses create a unique scenery of traditional charm. The biggest part of the outdoor scenes of ”The Durrells” was shot in Danilia Village, or “the Bouas Village», near Kontokali, in the northeast of the island. This is a replica of a traditional 1930s Corfiot village that was created by the Corfiot Bouas family in the 1970s.
Since then, it is loved by tourists who come to experience the magic vibe of this place. In Danilia village you’ll find beautiful stone made Venetian houses, little traditional shops, a museum, as well as an old-fashioned coffee shop. It’s not the first time that Danilia village is used as a filming location. James Bond movie “For your eyes only”, starring Roger Moore and “The Greek Tycoon” starring Antoni Quinn was also filmed in Danilia village!
4)Enjoy Greek coffee
It's time for us all to enjoy a nice Greek coffee break. On a balcony of a coffee house with stunning views will have the chance enjoy a cup of traditional Greek coffee. For Greeks, drinking coffee is like washing your face in the morning, it is some kind of a morning daily ritual because of the coffee’s strong taste and aroma.
There could be no better idyllic place to grab a homemade local snack before continuing our journey!
5)The White House of Lawrence Durrell
We will proceed northward, meandering through the scenic coastal villages of Dassia, Barbati, and Nissaki, while taking in the magnificent sea panoramas. Our journey culminates at the renowned White House.
Once the residence of author Lawrence Durrell and his wife Nancy, this historic abode now serves as a restaurant and vacation rental. Immerse yourself in the world of the Durrells in Corfu, as you explore their former home and its captivating terrace.
6)Lunch at the "White House" Restaurant
There could be no better place to enjoy our lunch during this cinematic tour than the White House’s beachfront restaurant. Taste the Corfiot Meditarrenian Cuisine by soaking up the environment that inspired Lawrence’s writing and listening to the Ionian Sea splashing at your feet. This super restaurant will offer you the best dining experience along with a wonderful view across the bay. The serving staff are efficient, friendly, and very attentive and the experience will be definately memorable. Enjoy every single dish from the homemade bread to the seafood and get ready for a perfect combination of flavours such as the crayfish risotto with saffron and dill.
Do not miss the deconstructed baklava dessert with pistachio cream, all washed down with a delicious bottle of rose or white wine of your choice.
