  4. The Monastery of Palaiokastritsa, one of Corfu’s most famous sites, dates back to the 13th century. According to tradition, the icon of the Virgin Mary was found where the monastery now stands. The current structures date mostly from the 18th century, with the year 1228 engraved on the church gate. Inside, there are priceless Byzantine and post-Byzantine artworks, and a small museum houses a whale skeleton. The monastery, used as a military hospital during British rule, offers stunning views of the coastline and Aggelokastro, with a road leading up through Corfu’s lush landscape.
