From April 3 to October 5, the National Museum of Contemporary Art (EMST) in Athens hosts We Who Betrayed the Horses, the first solo museum exhibition by Janis Rafa.
Born in Greece and based in Amsterdam and Athens, Rafa is an internationally recognised visual artist whose work explores the often-overlooked relationship between humans and animals. Her poetic and through-provoking imagery unfolds across film, sculpture, drawing and text, engaging with themes of mortality, coexistence and empathy.
This exhibition presents new works developed specifically for EMST, drawing on Rafa’s longstanding interest in the symbolic and emotional role of horses. She invites visitors to reflect on our shared vulnerability with the animal world – and the ways we have both honoured and failed it.
We Who Betrayed the Horses offers a powerful and meditative experience that challenges our assumptions and deepens our sense of connection with the non-human world.
