Mount Olympus: Full Day Hiking to Skolio peak at 2909m

Ascending to the summit of iconic Mount Olympus via an alternative route unknown to the general public, we immerse ourselves in the beauty of its southwestern side, leading to Mytikas. Skolio peak, standing at 2905m, ranks as the 3rd highest peak of the mountain, closely situated to Mytikas at 2918m, the highest peak in Greece, along with Stefani at 2912m. The route poses no technical difficulties nor requires safety equipment, offering a moderate challenge and a unique opportunity to reach high altitudes without technical passages or long ascents. It serves as an introduction to mountain hiking, ideal for those with moderate to good physical fitness, enthusiasm, and a penchant for mountaineering.

For the day hike to Skolio, we commence from the Kalivia of Elassona. Utilizing four-wheel-drive jeeps, we traverse a roughly 20-kilometer dirt road leading to the Christakis Refuge at approximately 2400m. Crossing impressive alpine slopes, we may feel as if we are soaring at certain points due to steep inclines. During the journey through the alpine zone, we relish the breathtaking scenery, with the possibility of encountering the protected Olympus Wild Goat. At the Christakis Refuge, we leave our vehicles behind and continue on foot. Following the international mountaineering trail E4, we reach the saddle of Skolio at 2830m. From there, we traverse the broad linear slope of Skolio until reaching the summit.
