Sea, Breath of Life

The exhibition Sea, Breath of Life celebrates one of the most emblematic themes in modern Greek art – the sea – through the work of leading 19th-century painters.

Running from July 5 to September 20, 2025, the exhibition also marks the opening of the newly restored Old Customs House in Nafplio, in the Peloponnese.

Exhibits include works by renowned Greek maritime painters, such as Ioannis Altamouras, Konstantinos Volanakis, Vasileios Hatzis, Nikolaos Lytras and Konstantinos Maleas. Each artist offers a distinctive interpretation of Greece’s seafaring identity, expressed through a range of styles and techniques.

The exhibition is organised by the Ministry of Culture in collaboration with the National Gallery – Alexandros Soutsos Museum.
