As part of the institution All of Greece One Culture 2025, the Palamidi Fortress in Nafplio will host the theatrical performance Ove vai? Konte Nano, Ove vai? on August 25 and 26.
The first Governor of the modern Greek state, Ioannis Kapodistrias, returns to Nafplio in this imaginative and historically grounded production. Passing by Saint Spyridon’s Church – where he was assassinated in 1831 – he climbs once more to Palamidi, carrying a letter whose contents remain unknown.
Three actors and a group of musicians present a modular performance – a kind of “musical theatre Babylonia” – that brings to life the turbulent period of Kapodistrias’ leadership. Following Greece’s War of Independence, the newly formed state was fragile, its society fragmented and political divisions intense. Kapodistrias, appointed governor in 1827, faced the immense challenge of unifying the country, establishing institutions, and curbing local power struggles. His reformist policies earned both admiration and fierce opposition, culminating in his assassination in 1831 – an event that symbolised the deep tensions of the time.
The performance draws from a wealth of historical sources, including Historical Memories by Nikolaos Dragoumis, Apologa about Kapodistrias by Georgios Tertsetis, Military Memoirs by Nikolaos Kasomoulis, Historical Anthology by Giannis Vlachogiannis, and Thomas Gordon’s History of the Greek Revolution, alongside original texts. Together, they form a powerful dramatic collage that reanimates the complexity, ambition and tragedy of a pivotal figure in modern Greek history.
