As part of the institution All of Greece One Culture 2025, the Archaeological Museum of Nemea, will host the dance performance Appropriations: Excavation of Movement on August 27 & 28.
In this new work by choreographer Mariela Nestora and YELP danceco, the figures depicted on red-figure and black-figure pottery are reimagined as living presences – no longer static images of the past, but dynamic sources of movement, narrative and inquiry. The choreography becomes an act of appropriation and reinterpretation, using repetition and transformation to render time fluid and porous.
Set in dialogue with live music, the performance becomes an open excavation – not of earth, but of embodied memory. Movement is explored not as a fixed form, but as energy, sensation, action and reflection. Is it context or comment, echo or origin, presence or perception?
Appropriations invites audiences to reconsider how we engage with the past: what we bring into focus, what we allow to fade, and how meaning emerges from the interplay between history and the present moment. In this layered space, time unfolds not linearly but as a shared, ever-evolving experience.
