Tinos - Messaria

Description

Under the Linden Tree is comprised of five autonomous renovated houses, nestled within old agricultural estate in the heart of Tinos, right below the towering peak and medieval castle of Exomvourgo. It is very conveniently located, only ten minutes by car from the Tinos port, and just another ten minutes to the popular Kolympithra beach. Renaissance maps of the area show that this land was used for the cultivation of wine (vinicultura) since the time of Venetian rule on the island, starting in the 13th century, and presumably up until 1715, when the Venetians finally surrendered the island to the Ottomans. In the 19th and 20th centuries the land belonged to the Ursuline Monastery, a prestigious all-girl boarding school and educational center. The Ursuline nuns and students tended and cultivated the land, while also using it for activities of the school. Today, the monastery is a folklore museum, and an important repository of the island’s cultural heritage, well worth a visit. It can be reached from Under the Linden Tree by a charming walking path.

Today the estate houses the vineyards of the [-] winery, as well as an olive grove, an orange grove, vegetable patches, and a comfortingly looming Linden Tree - the only one on the island. The vineyards continue the long tradition of wine cultivation in the area by featuring the flagship Cycladic grapes of Assyrtiko and Mavrotragano, as well as the very promising local Tinian varieties of Potamisi, Koumariano and Rozaki. Everything on the estate, including the vines, is organically cultivated.

The winery, which will open in a limited capacity in August 2023, and become fully operational and will be able to receive guests for the 2024 season, is harmoniously integrated within the Cycladic landscape. It melds classic Cycladic stone architecture, with state-of-the-art facilities in a minimalist interior, which will be enriched with the addition of contemporary art and gardens of island flora all around (and on top of) the building.

The space is designed to welcome visitors and foster learning and appreciation of Tinos winemaking – there are dedicated wine tasting areas, as well as several cozy spaces to relax and enjoy a glass, accompanied by Tinos-inspired cold plates and a view of the green valley and vineyards below. Tours of the winery facilities and operations will also be available starting in 2024. Our vision is to make the winery a hub for wine-appreciation on Tinos, while also highlighting the rich gastronomy, art and cultural history of the island.

We stayed in one of the lovely little cottages in this amazing location. Tucked into the hillside, the cottage was super peaceful and surrounded by nature. The views from the terrace are amazing. The place has a cozy, natural feel. Everything blends in with the landscape, and it’s super quiet. Just perfect for a proper switch-off. We loved the details and design features.

We stayed for Eastern at Oak House and some of our best time from our visit in Tinos was the time spent at the house! The house is nice & comfort, the balcony is sunny (which is good for for this time of the year), and with great view to the villages - ideal for relaxing. The surrounding gardens are exceptionally nice because they are partly nicely organized wineyards etc and partly pure "unorginized" nature, close to a stream with nice plants. Just outside the house there is the nice trail leading in 10-15 min to Loutra. A tiny drawback is the narrow one car-width road leading to the house, which for me was ok, but for an amateur driver could be a challenge. Overall though the stay has everything (and even more) one would need if he wants to avoid staying in the crowded Tinos port. Definitely recommended.

The absolute highlight of our holiday. Beautiful location, beautiful property. Extremely peaceful. Oranges, artichokes, lemons all growing nearby. Lovely welcome with fresh eggs and artichokes, tea, coffee, milk, butter and homemade marmelade. Will definitely be back.
