Description

The Merchants House is an enchanting heritage guesthouse set in Corfu's oldest village which is designated as 'a protected heritage site, in an area of outstanding natural beauty'.
Originally, The Merchants House were once three traditional houses, built entirely by hand, which sat side by side with a small path to the rear. The restoration (which was closely monitored by the Archeological Society), began in December 2010.
The furnishings include wrought iron beds and handmade furniture that recreate the Corfiot design of the time. Each suite has its own individual character as well as several ornaments and antiques from that period, marrying centuries of tradition with a modern standard of comfort.
The Merchants House offers guests a private escape to an unspoiled region of the island, set amidst the beautiful combination of countryside and mountains, with a view to both the island’s highest point, and down to the azure blue Ionian Sea. We are located on the Corfu Trail, our guesthouse is a perfect last overnight stop before descending the final leg to Agios Spiridon.

Merchants House was not only the BEST place we stayed at in all of Corfu but probably is one of the best places we have ever stayed at in all our of travels……ever! The time spent researching the history of the building, the thought put into decorating not only the rooms but the grounds, the sitting area, the bar, the breakfast area…..was like something from a magazine. It was “blow me away and knock my socks off” PERFECT. The quality of everything in the room….furniture, bed, linens, bathing products…..all not only with quality in mind but for the health of the planet, Greek made….every little detail was wonderful. They thought of everything to make your stay unforgettable….and more than succeeded. The breakfast was just as perfect with homemade granola and bread, fresh squeezed juice to start the day. To top it all off the Marieke and David took the time to talk to all the guests, making us feel welcomed. This is a place we will never forget.

What can one say about a place that since we discovered it in 2022, we’ve kept returning every year? Every time feels like going back in time—heritage stone walls, wooden beams, and rooms each with their own charm, all brought to life by David and Marieke. Their warmth, along with Deedee’s and Razee’s cheerful barking greetings, makes every visit feel effortless and familiar. Breakfast in the garden or on the cobbled terrace, with homemade bread, jams, and local honey, is always a highlight. The village of Old Peritheia is small, quiet, and timeless. We love wandering its streets, pausing at one of the tavernas, enjoying local delicacies, or visiting the old churches before heading out for hikes in the mountains. If you like the sea like we do, some of Corfu’s best beaches and fish tavernas are just a short drive away. Each stay leaves us more relaxed and we are already looking forward to our next visit.

Wonderful four nights at the Merchants. Very friendly hosts and best breakfast ever. The 4 taverns around are all very good. We promise coming back for hiking in spring. Angelika + Nils

We deliberately took time out from our hectic daily routine – and The Merchants House turned out to be the perfect retreat. Maybe there’s no such thing as a perfect place on earth, but this one comes incredibly close. Marieke and David’s warmth and attention to detail made this place unforgettable. Their passion is reflected in every corner, and it shows in the genuine care they provide. Our suite was spotless, cozy, and beautifully decorated with historical touches. The thick stone walls kept the heat out, and the air conditioning was a bonus. Breakfast was a treat – fresh Greek yogurt, homemade granola, seasonal fruit, and amazing shakshuka eggs by David. The nearby tavernas serve authentic, delicious food. Don't miss out on the starters and the homemade desserts! The terrace bar is the perfect place to unwind with wines, local beers, and gin tonics. For nature lovers, the hiking trails around are peaceful and scenic – but be sure to bring water and sunscreen. Marieke and David are always happy to share recommendations and directions. We had an absolutely wonderful time and are already dreaming of coming back. This place is a rare find – warm, thoughtful, and deeply relaxing
