As part of All of Greece One Culture 2025, the Theatre of Dion in Pieria, northern Greece, will host Axion Esti on July 30 and 31.
Originally composed in 1960 by Mikis Theodorakis and based on the poetic masterpiece of the same name by Nobel laureate Odysseus Elytis, Axion Esti is a landmark work of modern Greek culture. Fusing elements of Western symphonic music with Greek folk and liturgical traditions, it brings together orchestra, choir, cantor and narrator in a powerful expression of collective identity and spiritual resilience
In this contemporary interpretation, the Piandaemonium Ensemble – known for its unconventional performances using m
ultiple pianos – reimagines the score through the resonance of six grand pianos played by twelve pianists. This unique sonic approach lends new depth and clarity to the work’s emotional and symbolic range.
With more than 25 years of experience, the Piandaemonium Ensemble offers a fresh reading of Axion Esti that honours its roots while opening new pathways for its message – a vision of Greekness that is both grounded and evolving, deeply personal yet widely shared.
