Descrizione

Neapolis 1897 Boutique Hotel offers 16 beautifully designed and modern guest rooms, each room is named after strong, influential Greek women that where very well known throughout ancient Greece. Renovated in 2022 the rooms are up to date with all the necessary amenities to make your stay all that more comfortable and special. Whether you are in Athens for leisure, business or just stopping by; we have your needs covered.

The hotel itself is a recently renovated Neoclassical building dating back to 1897.
The Neoclassical architectural style emerged in the 18th century. Neoclassicism was inspired by the classical architecture of Ancient Greece and Rome which was seen as a symbol of order, clarity and reason. The movement emphasized simplicity symmetry and elegance and sought to return to the classical ideals of harmony and balance.
Athens is known for it is Neoclassical architecture but unfortunately after years of neglect many of these 18th century buildings that once where grand homes and had meaning and purpose are now abandoned and have been forgotten in time.
The story of our Neoclassical building is a very similar one. Even though the building was and is still a listed property. After intense renovations the building was brought back to life and became Neapolis 1897 Boutique hotel.
Renovating such a building came with its challenges, the design of a Neoclassical building typically features elegant, symmetrical lines and a focus on classical proportions and classical motifs such as columns and arches, wanting to keep most of its original design and charm and due to it being a listed property renovation came with limitations.

Neapoli translates to 'new city.' The name originally comes from the fact that it was a new area of Athens built beyond the perimeters of what was the original center of Athens. Areas such as Anafiotika and Plaka where considered the most central part of the city.
Neapoli was built in the mid-19th century by plasterers and marble constructors who came in Athens searching for a better life. As land in Neapolis was then outside the central area and consequently cheaper.
The area is well known for being the home of many writers, poets, artists and book publishing houses. Some of the oldest bookstores of Athens can also be found in the streets of Neapolis. The area is now part of the cities long rich history and is well known by the older as well as the newer generations.

Our hotel’s central location allows for easy access from the airport and the port as well as getting around the city. The nearest Metro Station to Neapolis 1897 Boutique Hotel is Panepistimio Metro Stations which serves the red line. There you will also find the stop for the Athens tour buses. The station is just a 10-minute walk from the hotel.

I have stayed in other boutique hotels, and I’m confident this one does not qualify as such. If you're assigned a room on the first floor, be prepared to hear noise from other guests, the kitchen staff, and the entry door being shut throughout the night. Also, our room smelled a lot like drain so we had to keep the windows open. We couldn't be relocated because the hotel was fully booked, so it’s a good idea to inform them of your preferences in advance. There is no on-site restaurant, and the breakfast is quite basic: bread, Greek yogurt left in the sun for two hours, cold eggs, and a very limited selection of fruit. If I return to Athens, I would prefer to stay elsewhere.

The hotel has some positive aspects, but overall, our experience was not satisfactory. Positives: ✔️ The location is very good, close to the city center, in an area full of bars, restaurants, and theaters. ✔️ The staff was extremely polite and helpful. ✔️ The rooms were very clean. ✔️ Breakfast had a good variety of options and was quite good overall. Negatives: ❌ Our first room was on the ground floor, next to the reception, making it impossible to sleep due to excessive noise at night. ❌ The room was very small, and the bathroom door was creaky. ❌ Although they changed our room without any issues, the new one (on the 3rd floor) also had noise problems, as we woke up at 3:30 AM due to the breakfast area being prepared right in front of the rooms. ❌ There was an unpleasant smell in the bathrooms. ❌ Given the price, the overall experience was not worth the money. Despite its positive aspects, the noise issues and lack of comfort did not allow us to enjoy our stay. We would not recommend it.

Neapolis 1897 Boutique Hotel is a very disappointing hotel. I honestly don’t understand how four-star hotels are rated here. The furniture is extremely cheap, and the iron bed makes loud creaking noises with every movement at night. The mattress is so soft that it feels like corners were cut during manufacturing. The bathroom is another nightmare — taking a shower ends up soaking half the bathroom, including the entrance area. I had to use towels to dry the floor and almost slipped. What’s worse, I stayed on the ground floor, and the sound insulation was terrible. I could hear the receptionist coughing, the sound of drinks being opened, and even dishes being washed at 3 or 4 in the morning. By 7 or 8 a.m., they were already pushing carts to the rooftop. I barely slept 3 or 4 hours through the night. This was my third hotel in Athens over three days — each night I stayed in a different place. Neapolis 1897 was the most expensive, yet by far the worst.

Short: Our stay (mine with my partner) was extremely pleasant. The rooms have ancient Greek women names. The hotel seems to be run by their descendants. Odissi (probably misspelled... Sorry!), Eleni and the lady from the breakfast were friendly, professional and very helpful during our 3 day stay at the end of March 2025. There is an elevator. There are stairs. It is super clean. Our room (called Agnodice) has a small balcony. The shower is amaaaaaaaazing!!!! I guess I had the best showers of my life in that room. The breakfast is Mediterranean, every day the same. (Which is fine! Athens has a lot of great restaurants. No need to fill yourself up at any hotel!) The hotel is in walking distance of Sintagma Square (20-25 minutes) and has many cafes and restaurants nearby. Detailed: The location is great. Neapolis 1897 is easy to find. The entrance is on the street. They have 24h reception open. Syntagma Square is 20-25 minutes away by walking. There are shops, cafes and restaurants within 5 minutes walking distance. Odissi and Eleni welcomed us very warmly the moment we stepped in. They showed us to the room called Agnodice. (All rooms are named after famous Greek women from their history and mythology.) Our room had a wall picture with a description of Agnodice at the entrance and the Leonardo da Vinci man above the bed. The shower was fantastic!!! It had the normal shower head plus 3 types of sprinkles (body level, head level and above the head). It was a great experience after a long flight and after all the walking we did through Athens. Although the room was small, it was cosy. The comfortable bed and the shower made it well worth it!!! Eleni was really spot on on our last night. There was a leak in the bathroom from the room above. She immediately offered us another room and a bottle of wine for our trouble. And all this after they fixed the issue within a few minutes. Odissi recommend us a great restaurant (Achilles Vergina) when we asked her. The restaurant was nice, fairly priced and close to the hotel. We were the only non-greeks there. All staff were friendly, helpful and smiling! The wifi was working smoothly. Everything was super clean. The AC was working properly.

Amazing hotel in Athens! Very luxurious rooms, rich breakfast, and amazing bathroom with multifunctional shower. Loved the rooftop terrace for breakfast. The neighbourhood has lots of great restaurants and bars to offer. We loved our stay there, highly recommended!
