Itinerary

Mask of “Agamemnon” (10 mins): The kingdom of Mycenae gave its name to an entire civilization, while the most well-known king of Mycenae, the legendary Agamemnon offered its name to this golden mask. During the excavations in Mycenae, Heinrich Schlieman was convinced that he discord the tomb of Agamemnon and gave this golden mask the name of the ruler. Described as the “Mona Lisa of prehistory”, the mask still remains a mystery since archaeologists claim that it dates before the reign of Agamemnon, being unable to share with us who is portrayed.

Sphinx statue: (7 mins): One of the most famous ancient Greek myths is the one of the Sphinx. The finest statue of the Sphinx dated to the 6th century B.C. represents the mythical creature in all her majesty just before its end. Listen to the story about the deadly Sphinx and how Oedipus managed to escape from the famous Sphinx’s riddle.

The bronze statue of Zeus or Poseidon (10 mins):

Back in ancient times, it is mentioned by the Roman encyclopaedist Pliny the Elder that there were 3,000 bronze statues in the city of Rhodes and an equal number in Athens, Delphi, and Olympia. Today, there are almost 30 bronze statues surviving around the world. The bronze statue of Zeus or Poseidon, found in the sea area near Cape Artemision, is a perfect example of early classical period art and one of the rare surviving original statues of the so-called severy style. The stories will reveal to you the destiny of the bronze statues of the 5th century and the beauty of the god.

The horse rider (10 mins):

The horse rider or the jockey of Artemision is one of the very few original bronze statues that survived until today. Discovered in a shipwreck and probably dedicated to the Gods to honor the victories in horse riding competitions, it is an exceptional work. The still unknown sculptor managed to capture the movement and vitality not only of the jockey but also of the horse. Marvel at the statue, while learning about the horse riding competition in Ancient Greece and the perfect way to depict these beautiful animals.
