Beneath the surface: Unearthing ancient Thassos

In this episode, we journey to the island of Thassos to uncover the ancient world lying just beneath us. With archaeologist Tassos Kakamanoudis as our guide, we explore the island’s mythological origins, its rise to wealth in the Classical era, and the meticulous excavations that have revealed temples, marble streets, sanctuaries and the agora of a thriving ancient city-state. We also meet local resident Anastasis Billias, whose Playmobil reconstruction brings to life the people who once moved through these spaces. From the quarrying of marble on sheer cliffs, to the revival of the island’s ancient theatre after 14 years, we explore how the past still shapes the present on this ever-changing island.
