From Sifnos: Boat trip to Poliegos and Kimolos

We depart from the dock of Platis Gialos marina, heading southwest through the strait of Kitriani–Sifnos. After about 9 NM we reach the north side of Kimolos and slip into the magnificent, secluded bay of Soufi beach – Riris’ famous “Valium” spot. Usually, we have this turquoise, crystal-clear bay all to ourselves and enjoy a relaxing 30–45 minute swim stop.

We then head southeast towards the uninhabited island of Poliegos (“many goats”), whose only residents are its wild goats. After about 5 NM and 15 minutes we reach the open-roof cave of Fanara, with its transparent blue water and colorful volcanic walls. We can swim, take photos from the rock in the middle of the cave and enjoy this impressive natural highlight.

Continuing south, we enter the bay of Faros, where the much-photographed lighthouse of Poliegos stands, built in 1898 by the British and still operating. We anchor to swim in the turquoise waters and visit the small lake that attracts wild goats. If we have snacks, fruit or vegetables, we can even feed them on the beach. We usually stay here for about 45 minutes.

Next, we head to the southern tip of the island, pass the rock that looks like an Indian totem, and turn southwest. If there are north winds, the sea here suddenly becomes calm and glassy as we are sheltered on the south side of Poliegos. We anchor in a magical, tiny bay ideal for snorkeling in perfectly clear waters and enjoy at least another 45 minutes.

We then continue towards Kalogeroi bay, with its white and pink pebbles, beautiful rocks and the ruins of old mines. Heading west, we see rock formations shaped like sailboats and slowly enter sea caves with the boat to admire the incredible waters. Afterwards, the Sifnos boat rentals team takes you to Poliegos beach for another 20-minute swim stop in waters so turquoise and clear they look like a pool.

A short cruise west (about 200 meters) brings us to another astonishing spot, Blue Bay, where we anchor again for around 20 minutes in what many consider the island’s best waters. From there we continue northwest towards Myrsini beach, a favorite anchorage of luxury yachts and the “rich and famous,” with amazing waters and a beautiful white sandy shore where we stop for another 20 minutes.

We then turn northwest back towards Kimolos, where we can, if you wish, enter the port of Kimolos (Psathi) for a coffee or a delicious seaside lunch at the local taverna “To Kyma.” Afterwards, we explore and swim at the fantastic beaches on the east side of the island, such as Goupa Kara and Prassa, the latter often regarded as the most beautiful beach of Kimolos.

Finally, we head northeast towards Sifnos, returning to Platis Gialos and closing an incredible day filled with turquoise bays, caves, wild goats and unforgettable swims.
