We recently stayed at the Athens Gem. We had stayed there previously in September 2024. The hotel is very convenient in its access to the most important parts of central Athens, and the price is right in comparison to more expensive hotels. That said, for Americans, not having a reception desk open 24 hours per day is not a comfortable experience. When we first checked in, we were informed their credit card reader was not working and the hotel expected cash payment or a wire transfer. For those of us without accounts in Greece, wire transfers are not simple, nor free. Additionally, depending on how long you stay at the hotel, you may need a significant amount of cash to pay the bill. In our case, we did not have that much cash. We were hounded for payment for several days before we had a friend with a Greek bank account pay the bill for us for which we reimbursed him. It was so bad that we were awakened at 2220 one night with the hotel representative demanding payment! It was the only negative aspect of our Athens trip, the stress of needing to find a way to pay this bill. So, book this hotel at your own risk.

Misleading ! Not a Real Hotel Athens Gem ruined my first impression of Greece. They advertise a fully functioning hotel with breakfast and services, but it’s actually just an apartment—no staff, no reception, no security. If you're looking to stay in a hotel, this is not a hotel. I stayed one night, didn’t feel secure, and left early. When I asked for a refund, they refused and falsely reported me as a no-show, and cancelled my reservation ! The way they treat customers is unacceptable, rude, unprofessional, and dishonest. They completely mislead clients, and I strongly advise others to avoid this place.

Unfortunately, Expedia made a mistake in our booking and booked us into a double room despite us being three people. The hotel was very accommodating and immediately made sure to get us an additional bed free of charge. The room is clean and the rooms are large. We had a couple of problems during our stay (none of them caused by the hotel) and could always contact somebody from Athen‘s Gem to help us out, even late in the evening. It borders on a nice area of the city to the west, but the city centre is a bit of a walk away, so if you don‘t like using public transportation, you should either be prepared to call a taxi or strap on your hiking boots!

First time booking with Athens Gem. I had called a week prior to ensure check in went smoothly. The day of arrival, we did arrive before the allotted 1-2pm check in time. We were fortunate that one of the housekeeping staff saw us at the main entrance and let us in. She then contacted management to see if it was possible for us to check in a bit earlier, and yes it worked out! I was a bit nervous as I’ve read others’ experience with check in. There was one day I sat in the little lobby and the manager did come and open the front door from 1-2pm for those who were checking in at that time. The room is fairly basic (compared to your usual hotels). But it came with a nice view of Mount Lycabettus. Shampoo/conditioner included. A/C was quite powerful. Room was nice, clean and quiet. Can barely hear the traffic or next door neighbours (unless they were being really loud in the hallways), otherwise night time got great sleep. Wifi in room included (connection was great, didn’t have signal issues). I also love their little elevator (can fit 2 people with luggages), because it plays random instrumental music which I found quite entertaining. The area was also safe, as we walked during the days/nights and didn’t encounter any issues. There are also nice restaurants within walking distance, and a grocery shop which is about 7-10min walk. It was also a 10-14 min walk to the convention centre (where I had my work conference). It’s also close to the subway. Otherwise for tourist attractions (Plaka, Parthenon), it was about a 25-30min walk. Overall my partner and I had a great experience with Athens Gem. A great, cozy place near lots of restaurants.
