Ioannina, Epirus

As part of All of Greece One Culture 2025, Ioannina Castle in Epirus will host the performance When the Wave Falls Asleep on July 31 and August 1.

Staged within the walls of Its Kale, near the grave of Ali Pasha, the performance revisits the haunting story of Lady Frosyni and the 17 women drowned in Lake Pamvotida in 1801 – a tragic episode from the Ottoman period that has become part of local legend. Through a powerful blend of music and storytelling, five women give voice to this past.

Four performers sing traditional songs from Epirus, using only their voices, while a fifth portrays Frosyni, sharing the life she never lived – her hopes, dreams and regrets. Her story gradually unfolds into a collective voice that speaks not only of loss, but also of resilience and the longing for lives denied.

In the end, Frosyni steps forward in a final monologue, reflecting on the beauty of life and asking for understanding. The performance draws from the oral traditions of Epirus, creating a deeply human connection with history that speaks to both remembrance and the hope for renewal.
