A golden age returns
Beginning of the dream
In May 1927 Rhodes witnessed the inauguration of one of its most historic and symbolic buildings, the “Hotel of the Roses”, lauded as an architectural masterpiece. The opening of the “Dream of the Orient”, as it became affectionately known, was a resplendent ceremony attended by the whole of the elite of the political and cultural scene of the Mediterranean.
Such was the majestic beauty of the building- its state of the art equipment and facilities, its furnishing with the finest pieces by famous interior designer firms of the time- that its fame soon spread throughout the world. The hotel promptly attracted names from the international jet set, while the casino, which burst into life in 1929, became a major attraction for the wealthy of the age.
Years went by and left their imprint on the hotel and the political, social and financial landscape around. Then, in 1999 the hotel was renovated by famous Italian architects and decorators committed to retaining its authenticity and historical value.
Its 33 rooms were turned into suites, with the exception of two which are the subject of a preservation order. One suite competes with the next in terms of the wonderful view they afford their guests – whether of the endless blue or the roses in full bloom in the garden – their opulence and their aesthetic grace. Discreet lighting, crystal chandeliers, ornate mirrors, sumptuous carpeting and sui generis bespoke service match the expectations of even the most discerning of customers. Imagine that your private butler – yes, butler – is there to fulfil your every wish with style and a smile. Feeling like royalty already?
But how else could you feel? This is a hotel whose corridors have felt the evening gown swish of beloved opera soprano, Maria Callas, and former first lady of Greece, Maria Kyveli. The walls have resounded with the booming laughter of Aristotelis Onasis and been privy to the conversations of Winston Churchill, Eleftherios Venizelos and, more recently, Georgios Papandreou and Konstantinos Karamanlis, all protagonists of important historical events. Indeed, it was here that the treaty of the foundation of the state of Israel was signed in 1948. The photographic documents of the glorious history of the island and the building decorate its rooms, radiating the aura of another era. You’ll experience a tingle of excitement as the entire building crackles with the energy of its legendary past.
Wandering around the gardens, the halls with the frescoes, the reception, lounge and dining areas, you’ll be swept off your feet with the grandeur of it all. But it is not just about aesthetics, the hotel offers the visitor a plethora of options for entertainment and recreation, with its ultramodern casino the centerpiece; a veritable hive of adrenaline-fueled fun, with a dash of sophistication, throughout the year. As for the treatment you can expect, it will be nothing short of “royal”; you’ll be just like a monarch of old surrounded by doting courtiers! After all, you are on chivalrous Rhodes!
