Samos: Pythagora's Homeland

I was astounded to discover that this magical Aegean island with the clear starry sky, was the homeland of important scientists of the ancient times: the father of mathematics Pythagoras, the astronomer Aristarchus and the philosopher Epicurus. It was also the mythical birthplace of goddess Hera and the land that hosted Herodotus and Aesop. The statue of Pythagoras lies at the inner port of Pythagorion (a village named after him), with amazingly geometrical design. The philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras was born on the island of Samos in 570 BC - best known for the Pythagorean Theorem: (on a right-angled triangle, the square of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares on the other two sides). He did not only think up mathematical principles during his life, but he also founded a religious society (the Pythagorians) with very strict rules of conduct.
