Itinerary

Day 1: Kapesovo to Monodendri

We start from the village of Kapesovo and we head to Vikos gorge from the path that begins from the village square and goes south towards Kipoi village. From there we continue towards the vilagges of Dilofo and Vitsa before we reach Monodendri for the night. This path goes by three of the most picturesque villages in the central Zagori area along with a plethora of stone bridges that are part of our route bridging the river vikos every time we encounter it.

Day 2: Monodendri to Papingo

We start our trek from the village of Monodendri and head down to Vikos gorge heading towards the springs of Voidomatis River for a swim for those brave enough. Vikos gorge is the crown jewel of the area although as a guide I much more prefer the Dragonlake which we will visit the following day. Then we ascent towards Papingo village for a well-deserved dinner and a good night’s sleep.

Day 3: Papingo to Astraka

Depart from Papingo and hike all the way to the alpine hut of Astraka at 2000m where we will be staying for the night. The path start in a forest are above Mikro Papingo and slowly enters the alpine zone of mount Tymfi until we reach the ridge where the mountain hut is located. There is an organized kitchen at the location but a sleeping bag is required for the night. From there we visit the famous Dragonlake and explore the surrounding area enjoying the alpine views of Tymfi.

Day 4: Astraka to Kapesovo

We complete the circle around the mountain starting our trek from the mountain Hut and going south towards the village of Kapesovo through the Vradeto steps a famous landmark of the area. We will be hiking at the alpine fields of mount Tymfi beneath jagged peaks exceeding 2000m through seasonal lakes and meadows. If the fatigue does’t allow it we can always cut the trek short and arrive at Tsepelovo and move towards the end point of Kapesovo by car.
