Music is a big part of Greek culture and the country’s Mediterranean climate makes it ideal for music festivals out in the open, especially after sunset. Rockwave Festival is a legendary festival, in its 21st year, graced by some of the most prestigious names in the music industry. Since 2004, it has been held in Terra Vibe in Malakasa, which covers an area of 40,000 square metres, the largest and most modern venue in the country.
Black Sabbath, Portishead, Moby, Iggy Pop, the Prodigy, Twisted Sister, Bruce Dickinson, The Cure, DJ Shadow, DIO, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds are amongst the names that have rocked Athens, while last year the Black Keys and Robbie Williams gave unforgettable performances.
This year, the explosive Last Shadow Puppets are visiting Greece as the main act of the first day of the festival, July 5th, and the ever youthful Suede, the Dropkick Murphys, the Subways as well as select local acts will be joining them. On the second day of the festival, July 19th, Lana Del Rey is set to make her second appearance in Greece. Alah-Las and Lisa Mitchell are also on the bill with her. This year, Ejekt Festival will be held once more in Platia Nerou, in Faliro, a stone’s throw away from the sea. It is an alternative festival in its 12th year, starting in 2005 when it burst into life with performances by the Chemical Brothers, Dave Clarke and Bent. It is regarded as one of the biggest festivals in the country with crowds exceeding 55,000 each year. It takes every opportunity to support and showcase up-and-coming artists, local and international, putting them on the same stage as real musical legends.
Ejekt Festival has seen names such as Moby, Bad Religion, Unkle, Faith No More, the Pixies, Jarvis Cocker, Royksopp, the Beastie Boys, Editors, Klaxons, the Vaccines, the Subways amongst many other beloved artists.
This year, on the opening night, July 7th, festival goers will enjoy a performance by Greek fan favourites James and Editors. Greek artists Σtella and Dimitri Vegas + Like Mike will also be there to make their distinctive mark on proceedings. On the second day, Saturday, 23rd July, the much anticipated appearance of Muse in the Greek capital is likely to bring the house down!
Release Athens Festival
There will be a dynamic new addition to the programme this summer in Greece. In 2016, Fuzz Live Music Club celebrates 10 years of creative presence on the Athens concert scene by presenting a new festival in Athens. Release Athens, which will also take place in Platia Nerou, has already raised the bar high.
On its opening night, June 1st, Beirut will be the headliners of the festival, supported by the band Daughter. On June 3rd, the beloved Parov Stelar is coming back to Greece to cause a stir and the Chinese Man collective will be joining him. On the third day of the festival, June 7th, PJ Harvey is returning to a city that adores her, while the star-studded line-up will be complemented by The Brian Jonestown Massacre and Slowdive. On the last day, June 13th, Sigur Ros and DIIV will take to the stage. And there’s power to add with more news on names coming soon.
